About Josh

Josh has lived in Vestal for almost 20 years. He lives with his wonderful wife and two incredible daughters. Josh is an active member of several Vestal community organizations: Josh is invested in Vestal.

Josh started his 20 year career in public service as an Assistant District Attorney In Suffolk and later Broome Counties where he handled major violent felony offenses and homicides, specializing in crimes committed against children.

Josh is currently the Special Counsel for the Town and Village Courts in the Sixth Judicial District. In that role, he administratively supervises 174 Town and Village Courts (including the Town of Vestal Court) across the ten counties that make up the Sixth Judicial District. (Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, Chenango, Broome, Madison, Delaware and Otsego). He is responsible for training and teaching new Town and Village Judges when they are elected to the bench, and also teaches Continuing Judicial Education classes to judges across the state.

Josh also serves as a Court Attorney Referee in the Sixth Judicial District. In that role, similar to a judge, he hears and decides cases and conducts trials in courts throughout the district. He is primarily assigned to city courts within the district where he decides landlord-tenant disputes and small claims matters. Josh is also assigned to family courts throughout the district and handles custody and visitation disputes between parents, and Family Offense Petitions (petitions involving allegations of domestic violence).

In 2017 Josh created the very first Centralized Arraignment Courtroom in New York State, right here in Broome County, to ensure that every person charged with a crime has an attorney representing them at their very first court appearance. Since then Josh has expanded this program to the remaining counties in our district; now every person charged with a crime in the Sixth Judicial District has an attorney representing them at their critical first court appearance. Josh is also spearheading the creation of Landlord-Tenant Hub Courts to provide attorneys for tenants facing eviction who cannot afford one.

As special counsel, Josh is focused on access to justice for everyone who appears in courts throughout our district. This means making our courts easier to use, and it especially means access to attorneys for everyone.
